Cool Wood Projects for Guys

10-Cool-Wood-Projects-for-GuysWhile these type of products can be generalized as guy projects, they can really be enjoyed by anyone. This group of projects is a lot of fun because the product of your woodworking becomes something that you can use.

It’s always fun to make things, but it’s even more fun to make things that you use on a regular basis. It’s fun to pull out something like a homemade pocket knife and use it knowing that you are the one who created it.

Everything on this list is very similar in nature. These projects are a lot of fun to make, and they’re also a lot of fun to use. Every time you pull one of them out, you’ll remember the project, and it will bring a smile to your face.

They will also afford you many opportunities to tell people about your woodworking, because people will see you using these items. It’s a lot of fun to share woodworking with others, and these are all great conversation starters.

Here’s the list, and I’ll show you a lot more detail about each one of them further down in the post.

Pocket Knife Kit

The first of these 10 cool woodworking projects for guys is a standard item that most of you carry around in your pocket. The tradition may have been started very early, and perhaps your father carried one as well.

A pocket knife is such a valuable tool to have with you during your daily activities. It has a million different uses that just happen to come up throughout the day, and the only thing better than buying one is making one yourself.

There are a lot of amazing kits out there that you can buy which will provide you with the metal parts for a good pocket knife. From there, you add the wood. These are referred to as scales, and you can use any type of wood that you like.

Since the wood requirement is so small, you can afford to stretch out into some of the more exotic wood species that might be beyond your price range if the project were larger. This is awesome, because you get to work with some amazing wood, and show it off on your project.

Pocket knife kits are available in a number of different sizes and configurations. Pick something that you know you’ll be happy to carry around with you on a daily basis. That way, your project will be fun, and also provide a lifetime of usefulness.

Book Holder

If you are not reading on a daily basis, you really should be. For many reasons, reading makes you smarter, makes you a better writer, it makes you a better communicator. It doesn’t even really matter what you read, as long as you do it.

A book holder that you can place next to the bed, or on a stand where you like to read is a really nice accessory to have. It eliminates the need for folding over pages, or having to juggle bookmarks.

It’s also one of those projects that can encourage you to read even more. There are a lot of designs out there, but the one I like the most is a tall triangle that you can lay the book upon. The holder keeps your spot, and you don’t have to dog ear any of the pages.

Money Clip

Minimalist wallets are all the rage right now, and for good reason. Even if you do carry a gigantic bulky wallet, you probably don’t need 99% of the stuff that’s inside of it. I was the same way, and I clung to my giant wallet way too long.

Going to step farther, a money clip is a very simple item that will only allow you to bring a few cards and some cash with you. It takes up a very small amount of space in a pocket, and you’ll feel like you don’t have anything with you.

If you are entertaining the idea of using a money clip instead of a big wallet, the transition will be even easier if it’s a money clip that you made yourself. Find a blank online, and just fill in the wooden section with a piece of your choosing.

This is another project that only requires a small amount of wood, so you can have a lot of fun by picking something really exotic. Make that money clip stand out, and any time you show it, people will ask you where you got it.

Fountain Pen

If you enjoy writing by hand, which is even funny to think about in general because it wasn’t that long ago where writing with a pen was just consider writing. Now, with computers and tablets, it’s considered the slow method.

However, there is something romantic about writing by hand, with a traditional fountain pen. You can get these kits from a number of different retailers, and you can find fountain pens in a lot of different styles.

The beauty of a fountain pen is that the nib, or the part that you write with, will wear down according to the way that you hold and operate the pen. This means that over time, the pen will grow to adapt to your writing style and get better and better.

Over the years, no pen will ever write better than your own fountain pen. On top of that, when you make it yourself it makes the object even more valuable. Take a look at a few different kits if you like to write with a pen, and you’ll absolutely love this project.

Tie Clip

There are more occasions to wear a tie for some people than others, especially if that’s the dress code that’s required at the office. However, even if you only wear a tie occasionally, a great looking tie clip is a nice accessory to have.

Tie clips can be very expensive. If you buy the right brand and the right material, they can definitely set you back a lot more than you would think a tiny piece of metal actually cut. Instead of going down that route, just make your own.

You can do this from a kit, or you can simply buy a very basic tie clip and overlay a nice piece of wood on the top. Use two-part epoxy to join the metal and the wood, and choose a great looking species to show off.

This is a great guy accessory, because even if you rarely dress up, it’s nice to have all of the accessories to really make it look like you know what you’re doing. After all, what’s the point of dressing up if you do it poorly.

Screwdriver Set

This one is a little bit more on the utility side, but I promise you that after you make your own set of screwdrivers that you will almost never use store-bought screwdrivers again. Not only will yours look better, they will also work better, but for a funny reason.

There is truly no objective way to determine whether one screwdriver works better than the other. Unless one of them is extremely nice and the other one is very poorly made, most screwdrivers are about the same.

A gigantic difference though is possible when you make a set of screwdrivers yourself. When you make something yourself, you understand it better, you appreciate it more, and for those reasons the tool tends to work better for you.

It doesn’t really make any logical sense, because at the base level it’s very similar to any other screwdriver. However, once you make some tools for yourself, you’ll really grow to appreciate how much better they work because they’re yours.

Beer Coasters

A great accessory that you can have in any room of the house that not only showcases your woodworking, but also shows that you care about your end tables, is a nice set of beer coasters.

You can approach this project from a number of different angles. If you have some exotic wood in the shop, you can laminate that together and create a nice set up. You can also saw cookies off the end of a log.

You can take a cutting board kit, and then chop it down into coaster sized squares and that would work too. Since there are so many options, all you need to do is think about it a little bit and you’ll come up with something that will work.

Arm Chair Desk

Sometimes you need to do a little bit of work, but you don’t necessarily want to be away from the family or out of the room that everyone is relaxing in. If this sounds like you, an armchair desk might be a good project to build.

This is really just a single piece of wood, or multiple pieces of wood glue together to form a plate that sits on top of the arms of your chair. When you’re seated, the platform becomes like a mini desk, and you can do your work right from the chair.

This allows you to get some things done but still remain in a public room of the house where everyone else is gathering. You don’t have to barricade yourself in the office anymore, and it will give you more face time with your family while you’re hustling.

Razor and Brush Set

Shaving is just one of those things that every guy has to do, and for most of us it’s not a lot of fun. One way that you can make it a little bit more interesting is by making a really nice razor and brush set.

The easiest way to do this is just to buy a kit online. These kits work with common razor styles that you can pick up in the store, and they provide all of the hardware and fittings that you needed to make a really good looking shaving set.

Even if shaving is a total chore for you, having a really nice razor with a great looking handle will make the task at least a little bit more pleasant. You can also make a stand that will hold your shaving accessories if you like that idea as well.

Wooden Bottle Opener

Sometimes after a long days work it’s nice to come home and have a beer. Rather than reaching for a store-bought bottle opener, or something really plain, you should definitely have a handmade wooden bottle opener.

There are a lot of different designs for this type of bottle opener that you can find online, but the most simple just works with a couple of holes and a coin or a washer. The metal piece grabs the lip of the bottle top, and pops it right off.

These are super easy to make in your shop, and if you want to make it a certain style, you can do that as well. This is also one of those projects that is fun to sell, which is something that I’ll discuss in the next section.

Making Things for Yourself and Market Research

Something that you can do which will help you scratch your own itch as well as do a little bit of market research is just carry and use the things that you make for yourself. When you take them out and people comment on them, start talking about it.

Ask people what they think about it, what they like, and what they don’t. The real people that you meet in your normal course of life will provide you a lot of feedback. You can use that feedback as market research when you decide what you’re going to make and sell.

For example, if every time you pull out your pocket knife people ask you where you got it, and ask you to see it, that’s a really good indicator of popularity. By the same token, if nobody mentions your tie clip at all, maybe that’s not the best thing to try and sell.

This works well for a couple of reasons. The first is that you get to make a lot of cool stuff for yourself, and you get to use it. The second is that the people who see those things will tell you if they’re valuable or not, and then you can make your next move.

Your Action Assignment

Now that you’ve seen these 10 cool wood projects for guys, it’s time to get out into the shop and take action on what you have read. Pick at least one of these projects and order the kit with the materials to get started.

Make the object, and then use it in your daily life. Not only will it enrich your personal life, but it will also make it easier, make it look better, or a combination of both. You can also use it for a little bit of market research, which is a third win.

If you have any questions on these awesome woodworking projects, please post a question and I’ll be glad to answer them. Happy building.
