Top Selling Woodworking Items
The hobby of woodworking is a lot of fun, and it’s even more fun when you can use the things that you make in order to bring in a little extra money. Even if you don’t go full-time, it’s useful to have money for tools and materials.
There is a big misconception among woodworkers that leads them to believe they need to turn woodworking into a full-time job in order to make money. That’s completely incorrect, and you can actually do well with woodworking as a side hustle.
You don’t even have to desire using that money for your normal expenses. If you do it right, you can bring in enough money that you can save up for major tool purchases and start buying your materials with the money you’ve earned.
This essentially turns your hobby from a money pit into something that may break even or even make a few dollars. In the end, if you can buy all kinds of cool tools and materials and you just break even, you’re still winning in my book.
So, how do you figure out which woodworking items are the top sellers? It all starts with a little bit of research and figuring out your market.
Visit Woodworking Shows
Selling locally is one of the first things that you can do as a new woodworker who is trying to make a little bit of money on your projects. However, you can’t just show up to a woodworking show with any old project.
The first thing you need to do is find different shows or events in your area where woodworkers get together to sell things. Then, visit one of these events and just walk around and get a good idea of what people are selling.
It should be pretty easy to figure out the common items, and if you stay for the majority of the day, you should also be able to tell which booths are selling and which are not. Look for the high velocity items, and see if that something you could also make.
Visit Craft Shows
Craft shows are another big one that doesn’t always seem obvious to woodworkers. Woodworking and crafting are not very different, and in fact they are probably more similar than they are different.
People that frequent craft shows and buy things from craft shows will also buy some of the working projects. That’s great for you, now all you need to do is find a list of craft shows in your area and attend a few of those as well.
Do the same thing that you would do at the woodworking show, and see what’s selling. Check for projects that you can make, and see if there are any other woodworkers at the show that you might be able to get to know.
Visit Flea Markets and Swap Meets
Though they are not geared particularly to woodworking, swap meets and flea markets are another good place where you can sell your woodworking projects. You may have to search around a little bit to find other vendors, but they will be there.
These are many times easier to find than other types of shows, and they happen an a lot more often. Depending on the market, it may be a weekly thing, or a monthly thing. It could also be every weekend, which means there’s a lot of opportunities to go.
Look around the flea market and find people that are selling wooden items. See what they’re selling, and if you have a chance to sit around long enough, make sure that people are actually buying the stuff before you decide to make anything yourself.

Check Facebook Marketplace
Another place that you can sell is Facebook marketplace. While this is usually meant to sell used items from person to person, you can also sell new items too. The other nice thing is that it targets your entire local area.

Browse around Facebook marketplace and take a look at the different woodworking projects that are being sold. If you find lots of people selling a certain thing, sometimes that’s a good indicator that there is a lot of interest in buying it.
Use the same ideas as before, and spend some time really getting to understand the market in your area. Once you can pick out some of the common items that are selling, these are a good place to start with your own spin on the project.

Talk to Vendors and Other Sellers
In all of these different places, it’s really important that you strike up conversations with vendors and people running the booths. As you get to know these people, they will reveal quite a bit about the market in the area.
Most people are pretty honest about talking to others, and if they find out you have a common interest in woodworking, the majority will spill the beans and tell you why they make certain things and why they don’t. That will be super helpful, and you can learn from their experience.
It’s through having conversations with people that have been there before where you make the most advances in your craft. It’s experience that teaches, and it’s much easier to listen to the experience of others than have to put in the time and mistakes yourself.

Make the Project Yours
Whatever you decide to make, think about a way to make it unique. Make it yours. If there is a well established market for some specific woodworking project, there is really no reason to buy it from you versus the other people that are already selling.
You have to give them a reason. The reason could be as simple as price, but it’s much better in my opinion to come up with another way of making your product unique or different. You could also make your project better than the competition, which is also a form of uniqueness.
If you show up with the exact same thing, you may only get lukewarm results. Think about a way to make yours better, or different in some way that’s more useful. This way, you show up with a good product but also a product that can only be bought from you.

Your Action Assignment
Now that you know all about how to figure out the top-selling woodworking items in your area, it’s time to get out in your shop and take action. Rather, it’s time to get on your computer and find yourself some shows to go to.
Book yourself a couple different craft shows and flea markets. These are great places to frequent anyway, and you can learn a lot from the different vendors. Find yourself some woodworkers that are doing well, and start a good conversation.
Once you have an understanding of how the market works in your area, and the different products that are in demand, you’ll be able to come up with your own version and will have a higher chance of success.
If you have any questions about selling woodworking items as a beginner, please post a question and I’ll be happy to answer them. Happy building.
