You Can Make an Acoustic Guitar

you can make an acoustic guitarThere are only a couple things that you really need in order to make a guitar. The rest will fall into place as you get the project going.

First, you are going to need a good book to follow, which will help you build the project from start to finish. My Top 5 Acoustic Guitar Making Books post will make the choice easy.

Next, you need to find a small space that you can work in. If you have the room for a nice big shop, then go ahead. If not, don’t worry. There are people who have made guitars at their dining table.

After those two things come the two most important things to have when making a guitar. The first one is easy to come by, and you are actually doing it right now. The next one is a little harder for some, but anyone who wants to learn can do it.

Knowledge and Patience

The most important things to have when making an acoustic guitar are knowledge and patience. Like I said earlier, knowledge is the easier of the two. There are resources for guitar making everywhere. The patience part can be a struggle, but there are solutions for that too.

1001 acoustic guitar making tips for beginners bookOne of the best ways to learn about making guitars is to read about making guitars. You can make a guitar if you have the knowledge, and a steady diet of tips and information will help.

I wrote my latest book called 1,001 Acoustic Guitar Making Tips for Beginners with the desire to give a new guitar maker as much knowledge as possible. It is a great resource, and can help you create a knowledge base about guitar making quickly.

Tips in general are a huge resource for any new project that you may be doing, and they are a big help.

Another great way to learn about guitar making is to pick up a step by step book and start reading. You will be able to see the process from start to finish, and pick up on the techniques, tools, and process. As you read, you will start to develop an idea of how things will go. This knowledge will get you off to a better start when the sawdust starts flying. However, all the knowledge in the world is nothing without patience.

You Can Make a Guitar if You Have Patience

If I sold patience instead of woodworking books I would be a millionaire. Everyone is a customer, and there are very few truly patient people. However, you can do several things to develop the skill, and a little patience goes a long way with guitar making.

The best way to have patience is to have confidence. Most new builders rush through the steps because they are afraid. They worry about getting to the end of the build and having a terrible sounding guitar. Have some confidence and you will be able to slow down without worrying about the build.

Next, do not set a time frame for the project. You have absolutely no idea how long it’s going to take to make a guitar. You are brand new. Don’t set a time and then either rush to meet it, or feel bad when you pass it. Let the project unfold like it needs to unfold.

Lastly, just let it go. Have fun making the guitar, and enjoy the process. This is the way to build confidence, reduce worry, and increase your level of patience. You can also read about the Last 10% to show you how important the last part of the project really is.

Don’t Let Anyone Tell You That You Can’t

It’s not going to be a super easy process that you fly through in a weekend, but especially if you have done a little woodworking in the past, you really can make a guitar. There are going to be hard core guitar makers that are more set in their ways, and sometimes they can make you think that it’s harder than it really is. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

You are making your first guitar. It’s going to be an experience to remember, and you are just starting your craft. The very experienced guitar makers have already gone through what you are about to go through. For that reason, they are concerned about other things.

They are working on things that are challenging for them. Just as you are working on something that is challenging for you. Don’t take on their challenge, take on yours. Once you make a few guitars, you will be ready for the next horizon.
