How long do I need to wait before adding a clear coat over a layer of wood stain?

In general the time listed on the can of wood stain is a little bit on the optimistic side.

The drying is timed in a warm room with low humidity so that way the product dries as fast as possible. This means the seller can put a lower time on the can, and sell more stain.

I recommend that you leave your stain to dry about 20% to 50% longer than it recommends on the can.

This way, you can be sure that your stain layer is nice and dry before adding your clear coat over the top.

Happy building.
