Is it possible to learn woodworking from just a bunch of PDF plans, or will I need books and videos too?
This is an important question, because I get it quite often, and I know the answer can benefit so many people.
There is a big difference between plans, and books. In order to learn woodworking, you will need a little bit of both.
PDF plans show you what to do. They do not show you how to do it. This is an important distinction, because simply knowing what to do is not always enough when you don’t know how to do it.
For example, a set of plans might tell you to book match two pieces of Indian Rosewood. If you have no idea what the heck that means, you’re already defeated at the very first step.
Plans are great once you have some woodworking knowledge and understand how to create the different parts and pieces. For that knowledge, you’ll need to know how to use tools, and that comes from books and videos.
This means you won’t be able to learn woodworking from plans and diagrams alone, you’ll have to have some additional help on how to do the different techniques in woodworking.
Thankfully, this is not nearly as difficult as it might sound. You can start right away by watching some YouTube videos on basic tool use, and that will get you quite a start.
After that, take a look at some books that you can purchase and continue your study of the craft.
Get some practical knowledge after that, and you’ll have the the knowledge you need in order to work with the plans.
