Exterior Wood Door Finish

My front door needs to be refinished. What is the best sealer to use? The door takes in the evening sun, which has dried the wood out. I had restrained & sealed it a year or so ago, however the varnish I used is flaking off.

Thank you for the question. I recommend that you use a UV inhibiting clear finish, and just buy something that is meant for exterior doors like Spar Varnish.

The sun is going to eat your door finish. There is no way around it. The only thing you can do is coat the door with something that will be a little stronger, so you reduce the number of times you have to apply the finish again in your lifetime.

You could always pay for an epoxy coating from a regular painting company, which some call a “forever” finish, but again depending on where you live the sun can be brutal.

Living in Arizona, the sun can destroy a set of patio furniture in a single season. Direct sun on wood is really tough on any finish, no matter how well it’s made.

Happy building.
