Cutting boards make contact with food, and the knife cuts the surface of the wood all the time. What is the best finish for cutting boards that will be safe and bring out the beauty of the wood?

One of the best ways to finish a cutting board is using mineral oil. You can also use a product called butcher block finish.

Both of these are essentially the same thing, and they are a food safe penetrating oil that brings out the beauty of your cutting boards and shows off the quality of the wood.

You can pick up a bottle on Amazon for a very low price, and it will last you quite a while through several cutting boards. All you need to do is apply it to the surface, and wipe it in a couple times until it has absorbed enough oil.

This is usually a few coats, and you can tell right away when it stops absorbing oil rapidly that you are close to being done.

Later down the road, after the board has had quite a bit of use, you can repeat the same process to restore the look whenever you like.

This is a finish that is completely safe for contact with food, and you won’t have to worry about giving someone the gift of a cutting board because of your finish.

Happy building.
