Making Holes for String Art

I’ve been asked several times about using a hand drill instead of a drill press for making the holes for your nails on a string art project. SO, can you use a hand drill to drill the holes for your string art projects?

The short answer is yes, but with some conditions.

First, you need to be sure that you mark your depth on your drill but with some tape, or even better a metal stop that you attach with a set screw. This way, you get the same depth every time.

Second, make sure that you hold that drill perfectly vertical to drill the holes. Practice this first, because even if you think you drill straight holes, once you put a nail in there you will really find out.

Finally, work carefully and patiently. If you slam through all of the holes really fast, you will end up with nails that at not very straight. The whole look of string art is based on really nicely lined up nails. Don’t rush and ruin that.
