There are many different types of wood that are used to make furniture. This refers to the type of material itself, as well as different species of solid wood.
For materials, you can use any range of manufactured wood as well as solid wood. This includes particleboard, pressed board, MDF, and plywood.
Most of the time, these types of wood are in places where they can’t be seen, or in places that are concealed like the inside of drawers in the inside of the carcass.
One notable exception being a substrate that is skinned with a piece of nicer looking wood veneer of a more attractive species. This can end up being the visible part of the furniture piece, and from the outside it can look like solid wood.
As far as different species of solid wood that are made into furniture commonly, these include oak, Maple, Birch, and poplar.
Some of these are more expensive than others, but they all have a long track record for use in furniture building.
If you are just getting into making furniture, you have a lot of different choices. In general, most hardwoods are perfectly fine for building into a nice, long lasting piece of furniture.
The only real decision you have to make is how much you are willing to spend on the materials. After all, some types of wood are a lot more expensive than others due to their rarity.
Even so, there are many examples of beautiful pieces of custom furniture being made with very expensive timbers.
