This woodworking tips card is about picking the right drill bit. If you are drilling lots of larger holes, then Forstner bits are a great item to have. They drill really well, and they leave holes with nice clean sides. You can find these in almost any hardware store, and they are not overly expensive when you buy a set.
Forstner Bits for Nice Clean Drilling
A forstner bit is a special kind of drill bit that is designed to make larger holes with clean sides.
The bits themselves are not expensive when you buy a set, and they work in your drill or drill press just like any other bit.
Pick up a set from a hardware store or a woodworking store. A set will break up the price of the bits, and be far more economical than buying them one at a time.
When you drill, select the forstner bit of the correct diameter, and drill the piece just like you normally would. Use a piece of scrap below the piece, and clamp it to the bench for safety.
The other nice thing about forstner bits is they have a center point that grabs onto the wood and helps guide the bit. A well guided bit drills where you want it to. It also is more accurate and moves around less.
Sometimes twist bits can wander a little before they enter the wood. This causes holes that are not exactly where they need to be. When you use a forstner bit, you have a much better chance of drilling exactly where you want to.
Drilling With Large Diameter Forstner Bits
The other great thing about these kinds of bits if that they come in very large diameters for bigger holes. You can buy forstner bits up to several inches in diameter. If you are in need of a larger hole, you can buy a single bit in the size you need.
Most of the time buying single bits is expensive. However, for a larger hole you may only need one or two. Buy the bit that you need, and now you can make bigger holes.
